Top Tech Events in 2021
The Ultimate Guide by Redwerk
Quarter 3: July, August, September

Early last year, with the pandemic just starting ravaging the world, we witnessed unpredictable social life transformations. Who could have imagined that we would live to see the day of the Olympics to be postponed!

We were looking forward to having all the pandemic implications as soon as possible out of our hair – but here we are, a year and a half later, dealing with the consequences of how international lockdowns upended our favorite IT events. As we’ve mentioned in the previous Top Tech events article, nowadays, we are lucky enough to have plenty of virtual events to choose from, accessible for everyone. Some of the events managed to sustain a hybrid format, by combining an in-person event with an opportunity to participate virtually, while others switched to an online-only type. For the latter, we still indicate the location of festival headquarters, holding our fingers crossed to meet offline in 2022.

While online, or as the organizers call it, safe participation still remains the most certain way to keep pace with the rapid progression of the IT sector, attendance plans still remain shaky. in this day and age, even virtual format has proven itself not as reliable as a good old, pre-covid face-to-face one. To prove our point, here are several July-September online and hybrid events we were looking forward to, that got pushed back:

Black Hat USA, July 31 – August 3, Las Vegas, USA, hybrid

The Black Hat events are the world’s premier technical security conference series with 24 years of history, uniting tech professionals and non-tech IT security enthusiasts. Today, Black Hat is a central hub for some of the world’s most experienced pentesters and hackers that provides security consulting, training, and briefings to everyone interested in the field. The event is held regularly in all corners of the world, including Abu Dhabi, London, Tokyo, and Barcelona, but this summer, it lures IT security enthusiasts to Las Vegas, the city that was the conference’s original host back in 1997.

This year, The Black Hat hybrid event provides the cybersecurity community with a choice in how they wish to participate. The organizers host both an in-person experience in Las Vegas and a virtual experience online.

The content and networking opportunities will be distributed in three major sections:

  • Briefings – vendor-neutral sessions, allowing presenters to speak candidly about real problems and potential solutions across both the public and private sectors.
  • Trainings – hands-on courses on topics all things IT security.
  • Arsenal – a space to showcase the latest open-source tools and products.

The organizers are currently planning for an estimated 5,000 attendees. However, with Las Vegas now fully reopened and with travel becoming less restrictive, they expect the initial number to increase. Given the two-folded nature of this year event, there is an inevitable in our days’ notion of canceling policies, stating that if the in-person event in Las Vegas is canceled – all paid passes will automatically convert to Virtual Briefings passes and the balance will be converted to credit towards a Black Hat USA 2022 Briefings Pass. ContainerDays, September 21-23, Hamburg, Germany, hybrid

ContainerDays, September 21-23, Hamburg, Germany, hybrid

Fun fact: the first festival in the ContainerDays series took its place in a real shipping container – hence the name. This year, we are expecting a 2-days event in a hybrid format to offer cloud-native enthusiasts productive engagement in deeply technical talks and hands-on workshops with the focus on or tried and tested tech practice in the areas of microservices, distributed apps, Kubernetes, CICD, and DevOps, in both the real and the virtual world.

This dynamic event will bring together 1000+ participants from across Europe, hosting 50 thrilling sessions and hands-on workshops onsite & online. We are also expecting a sponsor area, networking opportunities, and pre-conference online meetup.

A little specialty of the festival – it always had the sunscreens and water guns available onsite for the participants to use (being a summer festival); well, we guess you won’t be needing those at the end of September – but who knows? One thing for sure, though – we are thrilled to switch back to the in-person format.

Final words

Through these last couple of years of disruption and change, we’ve all witnessed the impressive power of technology to drive new opportunities and empower global communities. As the world of tech events undergoes crucial changes, we explore new formats, challenges, and opportunities it brings to the table. Since many have switched to new working regimes and schedules, facing new opportunities and challenges, we still have to look for ways to grow professionally and meet like-minded IT enthusiasts. Unfortunately, nowadays, during these global pandemic times, relying on the conferences one plans to attend in advance might turn out to be a tricky endeavor.

Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, but there will always be a silver lining in every cloud. In our case, the cloud is that IT events are constantly being canceled and pushed back, not to mention us being robbed of the benefits of offline participation. But here comes the promised silver lining: digitized events are more accessible: those, who otherwise could not be there because of travel costs or entry regulations, can easily join now. Online events are cheaper, easy to hop on/hop off, and more available. Also, by reducing the amount of travel we take care of the environment.

Make your picks, toss around some dates and meet with your peers and people you look up to in the tech industry. Don’t delay your reservations; make sure you are on the list of participants asap.

Hope we made this list compelling by giving you a deep dive into the opportunities the IT events market gives the techies today.
